Kacey Deamer from Live Science described the monumental flooding in Louisiana as being caused by the tropical moisture in combination with a low pressure system. The amount of rain that has dropped over Louisiana in just 12 hours was worth more than the average rainfall measures during three months of hurricane season. The staggering amounts of rain have caused detrimental flooding, causing damage to 40,000 homes. Six major rivers have flooded; one in particular, the Amite River, exceeded its record height by six feet. The threat of flooding continues as rain is supposed to remain in the forecast till the end of the week.
This issue is threatening and dangerous not only to the people who live in Louisiana, but for the environment as well. While river water levels rise, so do the sewer water levels, polluting the land. Ecosystems not sustained by excessive levels of water may be damaged.
