There have catastrophic declines in the earth's wilderness areas, especially the forests of The Amazon and Central Africa. The cause of this is widespread development, which alters the land and in turn destroys ecosystems and habitats. The global wilderness areas are important because they regulate many climates, house much of the earth's biodiversity and support many economies, but there are not enough policies to protect these areas. 3.3 million square km have been lost since the 1900s.
This issue is critical to Earth, and us who inhabit it, because soon only remnants of the world's wilderness land will be left, and as a consequence the ecological processes holding many of these crucial ecosystems together and cannot be restored to their fullest extent. Also a result of the increasing loss of wilderness is that climate change may increase because these wilderness areas act of buffers for regions' climates.
